Greece’s most popular healthy, low-calorie but nutrient-dense colorful salad, Xoriatiki, is always present on the dinner table, either as an appetiser or standing alone as a main dish with bread for lunch. An authentic Greek salad is made up of simple ingredients such as tomatoes, cucumbers, red onions, olives and oregano that are topped with a slice of creamy feta cheese and dressed with a generous amount of a mellow extra virgin olive oil. The tangy and salty flavor of the white feta cheese goes well with the flavorful red tomatoes. The mildly sweet vegetable flavor of the green crisp cucumbers contrasts with the peppery spicy flavor of the red onions that pair with the distinctive flavor of the green and black olives and the slightly bitter, pungent flavor of dried oregano. Greek salad is both delicious and balanced light.
